Work starts on campus for Net Zero Energy Project
Construction work for the University’s Net Zero Energy Project will start across campus this November 2024.
In June 2023 快播视频 was awarded more than ?21 million of funding from the Government’s Green Heat Network Fund (GHNF) which is being matched by the University to develop a Net Zero Energy Centre on the outer edge of to virtually eliminate the use of gas to heat the Bailrigg campus. The Net Zero Energy Centre will use state-of-the-art heat pump technology to generate a projected 39-Gigawatt hours (GWh) of low carbon heat.
To carry that heat across campus, 6.5km of district heating pipework will also be installed to increase the network’s coverage from approximately 65% of buildings to 95%. The project is expected to be complete in Spring 2027.
Additionally, 快播视频 has been awarded ?560,387 for its Bailrigg Campus District Heat Network from the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme (HNES). Funding will go towards upgrading additional existing infrastructure across the network so it becomes “Heat Pump Ready.” The University has matched this funding too, enabling the installation of more efficient pumps and meters, improving the central building management system, and enhancing insulation throughout the network.
These works are crucial in achieving the University’s pledge to reach net zero carbon emissions from electricity and heating by 2030.
Contractor site setup - Parking and travel changes
The contractor, Vital Energi, will be setting up several compounds and storage areas across campus in the next few weeks.
From Monday 4 November a new entrance will be created from George Fox Avenue into The contractor will create a compound on the east side of the main car park. The west side of George Fox car park will remain in use for using the new entrance/exit from George Fox Avenue. During the compound setup George Fox Avenue will be temporarily narrowed to allow machinery access and a safe working area, traffic management will be in place. There will also be a pedestrian diversion in place along the footpath alongside the car park.
South Drive one-way system
From Monday 18 November 2024 a one-way system will be in place northbound along South Drive from the up to the to enable the contractor to setup the site and construct the Net Zero Energy Centre. This one-way system will be in place until the project completes in Spring 2027.
Partial Woodland Trail closure
From Monday 11 November 2024 part of the Woodland Trail will be closed along the east side of campus to facilitate tree felling. This will remain closed until December 2024; further communication will follow once it has re-opened.
There will be further disruption to campus as trenches are excavated for the installation of the new District Heat Network. Each section of District Heating Network will be under its own temporary traffic management arrangement, the first of these is scheduled to commence on 3 December 2024.
