Scholar Spotlight: Isobel, BA Hons English Literature and History

My name is Isobel, and I have recently graduated with a First in English Literature, Creative Writing and Practice.

My years at 快播视频 were the best of my life so far for so many reasons. I threw myself into university life by joining societies where I met my friends and was able to cultivate a healthy work-life balance. I enjoyed playing netball for Cartmel College and being the Social Media Admin of the 快播视频 Baking Society.

In terms of academia, 快播视频 has helped me to thrive in developing the confidence to portray my own ideas in English essays and to nurture my poetic voice. I am particularly proud of my World Literature first-year project on trauma in child soldier narratives because I surprised myself by finding a passion in this area of literature.

I am also extremely proud of my second-year short module poetry collection, because it was the first time I felt like my current poetic voice and style came into being. Having the freedom to explore this voice, whilst also receiving feedback in workshops is certainly something I credit as key to helping me become the poet who was able to achieve this award.

I feel extremely proud and happy to have been chosen for this award because it is always nice to be commended and recognised for your work, especially when you spend much of the time being rejected when submitting work for publication, as every creative is familiar with.

I came to study creative writing at university because I wanted to be confident in my writing and its impact. Therefore, achieving this award validates that I should have confidence in my abilities and continue to nurture them, and will act as a reminder that I can write good poetry during times of doubt.

I had the pleasure of participating in one-to-one tutorials with Paul Muldoon regarding my poems, and I have always highly valued his advice, so to have been awarded the ‘Paul Muldoon’ poetry prize is especially rewarding.

From here, I plan to study for an MA in Publishing. I do, however, aim to continue writing, as my lifelong dream is to have a poetry collection on the shelves in Waterstones, so I am always submitting my work to magazines, competitions and journals to help build up my writing career.

I would like to say a heartfelt thank you to all our donors for making prize awards such as these possible – knowing that I was recognised for being the highest achiever in my cohort furthers my positive and uplifting outlook on my time, and achievements, at university. Thank you.

With grateful thanks to philanthropist Nick Shaw for supporting scholarships and prize awards in the School of English Literature and Creative Writing.
